Date: 2024-05-24

Food is essentially the heart of every function. Whether it's a wedding, business meeting, party, or funeral, where there is a crowd, there has to be food. Running a catering business requires dedication, hard work, and most importantly, a passion for food. If this sounds like you, then starting your own catering business is just for you!

A catering business is made up of large-scale preparation of food and may include service as well. Conducting extensive market research is important before embarking on the catering business journey. Get to know what people want, the existing catering businesses in your area and local food supplies at the best prices for your business. It is important to have adequate space to operate in, you may use your home or rent out a space, depending on your business plan and ideas. Your menu choice will depend on your market research and what you want to specialize in. It's always great to have original ideas, but honouring South African classics by keeping it traditional or putting your spin on it may also be a great idea. Once the menu is chosen, the most important step would be to acquire the equipment that you may need in order to set up your catering kitchen.

Depending entirely on your budget, you may simply invest in a few basic catering equipment items, and purchase more as your business grows over time. Even if you are starting a catering business from your home, you will require specialized items that will allow for large-scale food preparation.

For Food Preparation

Stove- Most catering start-ups will choose gas boiling tables as they can fit large pots and are affordable. They are also suitable for outdoor use.

Catering Pots- For events, large sturdy pots are required for cooking.

Insect Killers- During food preparation pesky flies can become a nuisance and health hazard, keep them at bay with electric insect killers.

Large Chopping Boards & Utensils- You will need chopping boards and large knives for cutting meat, poultry & vegetables.

Commercial Blenders- This will save you time and money. For soups, sauces & purees, a strong blender is required. Regular household blenders may have a weaker motor and not withstand heavy duty blending.

Large Baking Pans- For roasts, large oven trays and pans is required.

Deep Fat Fryer- Many catering events will require food that is deep fried and a deep fat fryer is convenient and efficient. You may choose single or double baskets based on your production size.

Flame Grillers & Toasters- If flame grilled meats are on your menu, a flame griller will be your best bet. Commercial Toasters are great for large scale toasting of sandwiches, wraps & shawarmas.

For Food Service

Chafing Dishes- these are perfect for keeping food hot during food service, especially buffet style.

Crockery & Cutlery- All essential plates, bowls, knives, spoons, forks, are to be matched to the food being served.

Urns(Water Boilers)- A handy piece of equipment for having a larger capacity of boiling water during food service.(for tea, coffee etc)

Tables & Tableware- Tables for buffet style food service is needed. Tablecloths and table runners enhance the appearance of your food service station. If your catering business chooses to hire these out for the events itself, more tables and chairs will be required.

Service Utensils- Dishing spoons, thongs, large forks etc are important for food service.

Juice & Milk Dispensers- These are great for dispensing large volumes of milk and juice during events whilst keeping it cool.
